Why is spill control necessary?

The Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations state that businesses need to take all necessary measures to prevent major accidents involving dangerous substances. But over and above this they also require businesses to limit the consequences to people and the environment when major accidents do occur. This is where spill control comes into play.

Spill Control is a fundamental to support good environmental and health and safety management. If hazardous substances spill then they pose a potential problem to the environment and people. Firstly, if untreated, spilled chemicals can find their way to foul and surface water courses. This is illegal and subject to prosecution by authorities which can lead to substantial fines and at worst imprisonment.

Another risk with untreated spills such as oils, petroleum’s and solvents can increase be the potential for fire. Effective spill controls must be in place, however the handling of such chemicals in an incorrect manor can also pose serious personal health problems and result in personal claims against the business.

It is therefore essential that all spillages are managed correctly. This can only be achieved if everyone involved is fully trained to understand the risks associated with the substances they are working with.

ISA Business Development and Support can provide the training for company representatives to manage Spills and all Spill Controls correctly. More for information please visit the ISA website.
