A new boiler repair campaign was launched at the end of November 2016 by the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC).
This was to remind consumers to use a reputable and qualified heating engineer if they are in need of a boiler repair this winter. The campaign starts just as the peak season for boiler callouts begins. Last winter British Gas fixed 1.3 million boilers and made 250,000 visits to residential problems. With this in mind, it is clear to see that this is a prime time of year for engineer call outs, making it vital that you chose the correct company for the job. The campaign is encouraging consumers to make the correct preparations in the event that they require assistance in the coming colder months. Having reputable boiler engineers contact details to hand will eliminate the risk of consumers hiring a rogue trader and causing more problems in these emergency situations.
The advice given by the APHC in sourcing reputable and qualified engineers include:
- Consult a member of a trade association, such as the APHC, who will be able to check that a trader has the required qualifications and that their past work has been completed to a high standard.
- Make sure they have certifications, such as Gas Safe. You can do this by checking the company’s website or calling them directly.
- Before a company comes for a callout, check how much you will be charged and what will be included in the quote. Getting this in writing, like an email quotation, can be a good idea so you have something to check the final invoice against. This is hopefully to prevent any nasty surprises when you receive an invoice of the job completed.
