LED lighting is somewhat different to other lighting sources such as incandescent bulbs and CFLs. Key differences mean that LED lighting is a superior source of lighting and as a result many are now switching to this type of lighting.
The first difference is the light source. LEDs are the size of a fleck of pepper. A mix of red, green, and blue LEDs is typically used to make white light. LEDs also emit very little heat, this means less energy is wasted as heat. Incandescent bulbs for instance release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs about 80% of their energy is as heat.
LEDs emit light in a specific direction. This reduces the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light. LEDs are more efficient as a result of this feature for many uses such as recessed downlights and task lighting. With other types of lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than half of the light may never leave the fixture.
