Fire safety awareness – be prepared this Christmas!

Here is an article by ISA Business Support advising on how to stay safe this Christmas in the office and home.

Some people may forget about fire safety awareness but at ISA business support this is always on our mind. ISA have been operating since 2006 to provide small and medium sized companies in all industries with on-going and ad-hoc support associated with Quality Assurance, Environmental, Health and Safety and HR requirements.

One of ISA business support services is to provide risk assessments, maintaining and checking your Fire Safety provisions as well as providing basic Fire Safety or Fire Marshal training in a business environment.

This is important all year round, but the festivities will bring extra need for plug sockets, the use of adapters and extension cables for Christmas lights and new gadgets. Don’t be tempted to overload the plugs you could be putting yourself at risk of a fire hazard.

Some top tips for a safe Christmas:
• Don’t overload sockets. Ensure only one plug per socket
• Always turn off plugs when they are not in use, except those that are designed to be left on long term, like freezers
• Switch off Christmas tree lights, fairy lights and outdoor lights are switched off overnight or when you leave the house
• Ensure that smoke detectors are installed and working
• Never leave cooking unattended and avoid cooking while drunk
• Check on elderly neighbours and relatives to help them be safe this Christmas
• Make sure you have discussed a evacuation route with friends and relatives that visit this Christmas
• Lastly in the event of a fire, get out and call 999.
